The MacMillan Singers, University of Toronto, is a renowned classical music choir that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 50 years. The choir was founded in 1964 by Dr. Elmer Iseler, a prominent Canadian conductor and music educator, and was named after his mentor, Sir Ernest MacMillan, a celebrated Canadian composer and conductor. The choir started as a small group of students from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Under Dr. Iseler's leadership, the MacMillan Singers became known for their impeccable musicianship, precision, and versatility. They performed a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works, and collaborated with many renowned soloists and orchestras. Over the years, the MacMillan Singers have performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Canada and abroad. They have also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Handel's Messiah with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of the choir's history was their performance at the opening ceremony of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. The MacMillan Singers were chosen to represent Canada and performed a stirring rendition of the national anthem, "O Canada," in front of a global audience of millions. The choir has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout their history. In 1988, they were awarded the Healey Willan Grand Prize for their outstanding contribution to choral music in Canada. They have also won several awards at the prestigious CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, including first prize in 1990 and 1994. In addition to their performances and recordings, the MacMillan Singers have also been dedicated to music education and outreach. They have worked with many schools and community groups, providing workshops and performances to inspire and educate young musicians. Today, the MacMillan Singers continue to be a vital part of the Canadian choral music scene. Under the direction of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, they maintain their tradition of excellence and continue to push the boundaries of choral music. They are a testament to the power of music to bring people together and inspire greatness.
