Hausmusik London is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1986 by violinist Catherine Manson and cellist Sarah McMahon. The ensemble is known for its innovative and engaging performances of chamber music, and has become one of the most respected and sought-after ensembles in the UK. The founding members of Hausmusik London, Catherine Manson and Sarah McMahon, met while studying at the Royal College of Music in London. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music, and began performing together as a duo. In 1986, they decided to form a larger ensemble, and Hausmusik London was born. The ensemble's name, "Hausmusik," is a nod to the tradition of chamber music being performed in private homes, or "Hausmusik," in the 18th and 19th centuries. The name also reflects the ensemble's commitment to creating intimate and engaging performances that bring audiences closer to the music. Over the years, Hausmusik London has featured a rotating cast of musicians, with Manson and McMahon serving as the core members. The ensemble has collaborated with some of the most talented and respected musicians in the UK, including pianist Steven Osborne, clarinetist Michael Collins, and violist Lawrence Power. Hausmusik London has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK, including Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Purcell Room. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, earning a reputation for its dynamic and engaging performances. One of the highlights of Hausmusik London's career was its performance at the BBC Proms in 2009. The ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, including his Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor and his String Quintet No. 4 in G minor. The performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and musicality, and cemented Hausmusik London's reputation as one of the UK's premier chamber music ensembles. In addition to its performances, Hausmusik London has also been recognized for its recordings. The ensemble has released several critically acclaimed albums, including a recording of Mozart's Piano Quartets with Steven Osborne, which was named one of the best classical recordings of 2010 by The Guardian. Hausmusik London has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with schools and community organizations throughout the UK, introducing young people to the joys of classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. In 2016, Hausmusik London celebrated its 30th anniversary with a series of concerts and events throughout the UK. The ensemble continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and beloved chamber music ensembles in the UK and beyond.
