Bonini began his musical studies at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already an accomplished musician. Bonini's early musical training was focused on the violin, and he quickly became a skilled performer. He also studied composition, and his early works showed promise. In 1690, Bonini was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the church of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna. During his time at San Giovanni in Monte, Bonini composed a number of works for the church, including masses, motets, and other sacred music. His compositions were well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer. In addition to his work at the church, Bonini also performed as a violinist in various orchestras and ensembles in Bologna. In 1701, Bonini left San Giovanni in Monte to take a position as the maestro di cappella at the church of San Petronio in Bologna. This was a significant promotion, and it allowed Bonini to further develop his skills as a composer and conductor. During his time at San Petronio, Bonini composed a number of works for the church, including masses, motets, and other sacred music. Bonini's compositions were characterized by their intricate harmonies and complex counterpoint. He was particularly skilled at writing for the voice, and his choral works were highly regarded.
