Ben Lulich is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a clarinetist. He was born on December 22, 1979, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Lulich was exposed to classical music and began playing the clarinet at the age of 10. Lulich's talent for the clarinet was evident from the beginning, and he quickly became a standout performer. He attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of Rosario Mazzeo, the former principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lulich's time at the conservatory was a formative period in his career, and he credits Mazzeo with helping him develop his unique sound and style. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Lulich began his professional career as a clarinetist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented performer and was invited to play with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the country. In 2003, he was appointed as the principal clarinetist of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 10 years. During his tenure with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Lulich was involved in many notable performances and recordings. He was a featured soloist on several recordings, including the orchestra's Grammy-nominated recording of John Luther Adams' "Become Ocean." He also performed as a soloist in the orchestra's performances of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Copland's Clarinet Concerto. In addition to his work with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Lulich has also performed with many other orchestras and ensembles. He has been a guest soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the New World Symphony, among others. He has also performed with chamber music groups such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Seattle Chamber Music Society. Lulich's talent as a clarinetist has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2002, he was a winner of the International Clarinet Association's Young Artist Competition, and in 2003, he was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. He has also been a finalist in the Concert Artists Guild Competition and the Naumburg Clarinet Competition. Despite his many accomplishments, Lulich remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to constantly improving his playing. He is also passionate about teaching and has served on the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music and the Pacific Lutheran University School of Music. In recent years, Lulich has continued to perform and record as a soloist and chamber musician. He has also expanded his repertoire to include contemporary music, and has premiered works by composers such as John Luther Adams and Andrew Norman.
