Role:ComposerJonathan Keren was born on May 12, 1975, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Keren showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the cello and violin as well. Keren attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition under the guidance of renowned composer John Corigliano. During his time at Juilliard, Keren composed several works that received critical acclaim, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard Orchestra in 1997. After graduating from Juilliard, Keren moved to Europe to further his studies. He spent several years in Vienna, Austria, where he studied with composer Wolfgang Rihm at the University of Music and Performing Arts. During this time, Keren continued to compose and his works were performed by various orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. In 2003, Keren returned to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California. He quickly became involved in the city's vibrant music scene and began collaborating with local musicians and ensembles. In 2005, Keren was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic to compose a new work for their Green Umbrella series. The resulting piece, titled "Echoes of the Future," was premiered at Walt Disney Concert Hall to critical acclaim. Over the years, Keren has continued to compose works for a variety of ensembles and orchestras. His music is known for its intricate harmonies and use of unconventional instrumentation. Some of his most notable works include his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered by pianist Yuja Wang and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2010, and his String Quartet No. 2, which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet in 2015. In addition to his work as a composer, Keren is also a respected music educator. He has taught composition at several universities, including the University of Southern California and the California Institute of the Arts. Many of his former students have gone on to successful careers in the music industry. Despite his success, Keren remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to compose new works and collaborate with musicians from around the world.
