In 1837, Ernst II began studying music formally at the Leipzig Conservatory. He studied composition with Felix Mendelssohn and piano with Ignaz Moscheles. During his time at the conservatory, Ernst II composed several works, including his Piano Sonata in C minor and his String Quartet in D major. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Ernst II returned to Coburg and began working as a court musician. He composed music for the court and performed in public concerts. In 1842, he was appointed the director of the court orchestra, a position he held for the rest of his life. Ernst II's compositions were influenced by the Romantic era of music. His works were characterized by their emotional intensity and expressive melodies. He composed in a variety of genres, including symphonies, chamber music, and operas. One of Ernst II's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2 in E-flat major. The symphony was composed in 1842 and premiered in Coburg the following year.
