Henri Martelli was a French composer and pianist who was born on January 17, 1895, in Marseille, France. He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical education at a young age. Martelli showed a natural talent for music and quickly became proficient in playing the piano. He went on to study at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Gabriel Fauré and Charles-Marie Widor. Martelli's early compositions were heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement, which was popular in France at the time. His music was characterized by its use of rich harmonies, delicate melodies, and subtle textures. Martelli's early works include a number of piano pieces, as well as chamber music and songs. In 1920, Martelli was awarded the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Italy for several years. During this time, he was exposed to the works of Italian composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Giuseppe Verdi, which had a significant impact on his music. Martelli's compositions from this period reflect a more dramatic and emotional style, with a greater emphasis on melody and harmony. Martelli's most famous work is his opera, "Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame," which was first performed in 1926. The opera is based on a medieval legend about a juggler who performs for the Virgin Mary and is granted a place in heaven. The opera was a critical and commercial success and has remained a popular work in the operatic repertoire. In addition to his opera, Martelli composed a number of other works for the stage, including ballets and operettas. He also wrote a significant amount of chamber music, including string quartets, piano trios, and sonatas. Martelli's music is known for its lyricism, emotional depth, and technical virtuosity. Martelli continued to compose throughout his life, despite suffering from poor health in his later years. He died on June 8, 1980, in Paris, France, at the age of 85. Today, Martelli is remembered as one of the most important French composers of the 20th century, and his music continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world.
