Born on August 22, 1963, in San Francisco, California, Washburne grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. As a child, Washburne was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, which sparked his interest in music. Washburne began playing the trombone at the age of 10 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. He attended the San Francisco School of the Arts, where he studied with trombonist John Klausen. After graduating from high school, Washburne went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1985. After completing his undergraduate studies, Washburne continued his education at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1987. During his time at the conservatory, Washburne studied with renowned trombonist Frank L. Battisti and composer William Thomas McKinley. Following his studies, Washburne began his professional career as a trombonist, performing with a variety of ensembles and orchestras. He quickly gained a reputation as a versatile and skilled musician, and his career began to take off. One of Washburne's early highlights was his performance with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1989. He was invited to join the orchestra as a trombonist and toured with them for several years. During his time with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Washburne had the opportunity to perform at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. In addition to his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Washburne has performed with a wide range of other ensembles and orchestras. He has worked with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra, among others. Washburne is also an accomplished composer and arranger.
