His father recognized his son's talent for music at an early age and began teaching him the piano and music theory. Adolphe showed great promise as a musician and began composing his own music at the age of 12. DesLandres studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Ambroise Thomas and François Bazin. He won the Prix de Rome in 1863 for his cantata "Le Retour de Tobie," which earned him a scholarship to study in Rome. While in Rome, DesLandres studied the works of the great Italian composers and was greatly influenced by their music. DesLandres returned to Paris in 1866 and began his career as a composer. He wrote music for the theater, including operas, ballets, and incidental music for plays. His first opera, "La Fille de Roland," was premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in 1871 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. DesLandres continued to compose operas throughout his career, including "Le Roi de Lahore" (1877), "Sapho" (1884), and "Le Chemineau" (1897). His operas were known for their beautiful melodies and lush orchestration. He also wrote several ballets, including "La Korrigane" (1880) and "La Fille Mal Gardée" (1885). In addition to his work for the theater, DesLandres also wrote chamber music, including string quartets and piano trios. His "Quintette pour piano et cordes" (1879) is considered one of his finest works. He also wrote several pieces for solo piano, including "Nocturne" (1875) and "Valse-Caprice" (1880). DesLandres was a prolific composer and wrote over 100 works during his career. His music was popular in France and was performed regularly in the concert halls and theaters of Paris. He was known for his ability to write music that was both beautiful and accessible to audiences. DesLandres died on February 26, 1911, in Paris, France. He was 71 years old.
