Born in 1969 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Boerma showed an early interest in music, and began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. Boerma's talent for music quickly became apparent, and he went on to study at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. Another highlight of Boerma's career is his work as an arranger for the world-renowned drum and bugle corps, the Phantom Regiment. Boerma has arranged a number of pieces for the corps, including their 2008 show, "Spartacus," which won the Drum Corps International World Championship. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Boerma is also a respected educator, and has taught at a number of universities and music schools throughout the United States. He is currently the Director of Bands at Western Michigan University, where he oversees the university's concert and marching bands.
