Sinfonia Australia is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by conductor and pianist, Dr. Nicholas Milton. The ensemble is based in Sydney, Australia and is made up of some of the country's most talented musicians. Dr. Nicholas Milton, who is also the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, founded Sinfonia Australia with the aim of creating a world-class ensemble that would showcase the best of Australian classical music talent. The ensemble's mission is to promote and perform classical music from Australia and around the world, and to inspire and educate audiences of all ages. Sinfonia Australia's main members include some of Australia's most accomplished musicians, including violinist and concertmaster, Sun Yi, cellist, Julian Smiles, and flautist, Jane Rutter. The ensemble also features a rotating cast of guest musicians, including some of the world's most renowned soloists. Over the years, Sinfonia Australia has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Neville Marriner, and Vladimir Ashkenazy. One of the highlights of Sinfonia Australia's career was their performance at the 2012 London Olympics, where they performed at the Australian High Commission in London. The ensemble also performed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where they were the official orchestra for the Australian team. Sinfonia Australia has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the ensemble won the prestigious Limelight Award for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of the music of Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe. The ensemble has also been nominated for several ARIA Awards, which are the Australian equivalent of the Grammy Awards. In addition to their performances, Sinfonia Australia is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and community organizations, and they also offer masterclasses and workshops for young musicians.
