Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other Baroque composers. The ensemble was founded in 1990 in Leipzig, Germany, by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the music of Bach and a desire to explore the rich musical heritage of the region. The founding members of the ensemble included violinist and conductor Georg Christoph Biller, cellist Matthias Wollong, and harpsichordist Michael Schönheit. They were soon joined by other musicians from the Leipzig area, including members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Thomanerchor, the famous boys' choir that Bach himself had directed in the 18th century. From the beginning, the Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent was committed to performing Bach's music in the context of the historical and cultural traditions of the region. They sought to recreate the sound and style of Bach's own performances, using period instruments and historical performance practices. One of the highlights of the ensemble's early years was their participation in the Leipzig Bach Festival, an annual event that celebrates the life and music of Bach in the city where he lived and worked for much of his career. The Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent quickly became a fixture of the festival, performing in concerts and collaborating with other musicians and ensembles from around the world. In addition to their work in Leipzig, the Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent has also performed extensively throughout Germany and Europe, as well as in North and South America and Asia. They have appeared in major concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the ensemble's most notable achievements was their recording of Bach's complete sacred cantatas, a monumental project that took over a decade to complete. The recordings, which were released on the Carus label, received widespread critical acclaim and have been hailed as a landmark achievement in the history of Bach performance. The Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors for their contributions to the world of classical music. In 2000, they were awarded the Echo Klassik, one of the most prestigious awards in the German music industry, for their recording of Bach's St. John Passion. They have also been awarded the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, the Medal of Merit of the State of Saxony, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Today, the Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent continues to be one of the leading ensembles in the world of Baroque music. They remain committed to their mission of exploring and celebrating the rich musical heritage of the region, and to bringing the music of Bach and other Baroque composers to audiences around the world.
