Dogs of Desire is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by David Alan Miller, the music director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble is based in Albany, New York, and is known for its innovative and eclectic approach to classical music. The founding of Dogs of Desire was inspired by Miller's desire to create a new kind of classical music ensemble that would appeal to a wider audience. He envisioned a group that would combine the energy and excitement of rock music with the sophistication and complexity of classical music. To achieve this vision, Miller assembled a group of talented musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds. The ensemble's core members include a string quartet, a brass quintet, a percussionist, a keyboardist, and a guitarist. In addition to these core members, Dogs of Desire often collaborates with guest artists from a wide range of musical genres. One of the defining features of Dogs of Desire is its commitment to commissioning and performing new works by contemporary composers. Over the years, the ensemble has premiered over 100 new works, many of which have been written specifically for Dogs of Desire. Some of the highlights of Dogs of Desire's performances include their collaborations with artists such as DJ Spooky, the rock band Rusted Root, and the hip-hop group The Roots. The ensemble has also performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. In addition to their live performances, Dogs of Desire has also released several recordings. Their debut album, Dogs of Desire, was released in 1997 and features works by composers such as John Adams, Michael Daugherty, and David Lang. The ensemble's second album, Dogs of Desire Play Zappa, was released in 2004 and features arrangements of the music of Frank Zappa. Over the years, Dogs of Desire has received numerous awards and accolades for their innovative approach to classical music. In 2004, the ensemble was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. In 2010, they were awarded the Paul Revere Award for Graphic Excellence for their album Dogs of Desire Play Zappa. Despite their success, Dogs of Desire remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new and innovative ways to engage with audiences. Through their collaborations with artists from a wide range of musical genres and their commitment to commissioning and performing new works, Dogs of Desire has established itself as one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in contemporary classical music.
