His father, Johannes van Westerhout, was a musician and a composer who worked as a conductor in various Italian cities. Alberto grew up in a musical family and showed an early interest in music. He started playing the piano at the age of six and began composing at the age of ten. Alberto van Westerhout received his musical education at the Conservatory of Naples, where he studied composition with Paolo Serrao and piano with Beniamino Cesi. He graduated in 1879 with a diploma in piano and in 1881 with a diploma in composition. After graduation, he worked as a piano teacher and a conductor in various Italian cities, including Naples, Bari, and Palermo. Van Westerhout's early compositions were influenced by the Italian opera tradition. His first opera, "Giovanni da Procida," was premiered in Naples in 1880 and received critical acclaim. His second opera, "Amleto," based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," was premiered in Bari in 1882 and was also well-received. In 1883, he composed his third opera, "Ippolita," which was premiered in Palermo. In 1884, van Westerhout moved to Milan, where he worked as a conductor at the Teatro alla Scala. He continued to compose operas, including "La città morta" (1884), "La sirena" (1887), and "Gli amanti" (1890). However, his most famous opera is "Vanessa," which he composed in 1909. The libretto was written by the American poet and playwright Gian Carlo Menotti. "Vanessa" was premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in 1958, almost 50 years after van Westerhout's death, and became an instant success. It has since been performed in many opera houses around the world. Apart from his operas, van Westerhout also composed orchestral and chamber music. His most famous orchestral work is the "Sinfonia in C minor," which he composed in 1883. The sinfonia was premiered in Naples in 1884 and was well-received. It is considered one of the best examples of Italian symphonic music of the late 19th century. Van Westerhout also composed several chamber music works, including a string quartet, a piano trio, and a sonata for violin and piano. Van Westerhout's music is characterized by its melodic richness, harmonic complexity, and dramatic intensity. He was a master of orchestration and knew how to use the orchestra to create powerful and emotional effects. His operas are known for their lyrical beauty, their psychological depth, and their ability to convey complex emotions. His orchestral and chamber music works are characterized by their virtuosity, their elegance, and their originality. Van Westerhout died on August 31, 1893, in Milan, at the age of 34.
