Role:Composer ConductorSamy Moussa is a Canadian composer of classical music who has gained international recognition for his innovative and powerful compositions. Born in Montreal in 1984, Moussa grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father, Samir Moussa, is a composer and conductor, and his mother, Louise Bessette, is a renowned pianist. Moussa began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and theory with his mother. He later studied composition with his father and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University in Montreal. He then pursued further studies in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied with Hanspeter Kyburz and worked closely with the Berlin Philharmonic. Moussa's early works were influenced by the music of his father, as well as by the works of composers such as Stravinsky, Ligeti, and Xenakis. His compositions often feature complex rhythms, intricate textures, and a wide range of instrumental colors. He has also been influenced by his interest in science and technology, and his works often explore themes related to physics, astronomy, and mathematics. One of Moussa's early works, "A Globe Itself Infolding," was premiered by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 2009. The piece was inspired by the work of the physicist David Bohm, and features a complex web of rhythms and textures that build to a powerful climax. The piece was well-received by critics and established Moussa as a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music. Moussa's breakthrough work came in 2012 with the premiere of his Symphony No. 1, "Concordia." The piece was commissioned by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and was inspired by the 2011 student protests in Quebec. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that captures the spirit of the protests and the struggle for social justice. The piece features a large orchestra, including a choir and soloists, and incorporates elements of rock music and spoken word. "Concordia" was a critical and commercial success, and established Moussa as one of the most exciting young composers of his generation. The piece has been performed by orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Since the premiere of "Concordia," Moussa has continued to produce a steady stream of innovative and powerful works. In 2014, he premiered his Piano Concerto, which was commissioned by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and features the pianist Marc-André Hamelin. The concerto is a virtuosic and challenging work that showcases Moussa's skill as a composer and his ability to create complex and engaging textures. In 2016, Moussa premiered his Symphony No. 2, "Ascension," which was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The piece is inspired by the idea of transcendence and features a large orchestra, including a choir and soloists. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that builds to a climactic finale, and has been praised for its innovative use of orchestration and its ability to capture the spiritual and emotional dimensions of the human experience. Moussa's most recent work, "Voyage Through the Night," was premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic in 2019. The piece is a tribute to the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his book "The Little Prince," and features a large orchestra and choir.More....
