Martha Councell was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Martha showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. As Martha grew older, her passion for music only intensified. She began studying at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City at the age of 16, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Throughout her career, Martha has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, and Gustavo Dudamel. One of Martha's most notable performances was her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2008, where she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was met with critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising Martha's "impeccable technique and musical sensitivity." Martha has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2010, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a solo career. She was also named a Gilmore Young Artist in 2012, which is awarded to pianists who demonstrate exceptional talent and promise. In addition to her performing career, Martha is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Martha's repertoire is vast and varied, ranging from classical works by Bach and Mozart to contemporary pieces by living composers. She is known for her technical precision and musical sensitivity, and her performances are often described as both powerful and nuanced.
