Fuoco e Cenere
Artist Info
Role:EnsembleFuoco e Cenere is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. The ensemble's name, which translates to "Fire and Ashes," reflects their commitment to exploring the rich and varied repertoire of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The founding members of Fuoco e Cenere were violinist Jay Bernfeld, harpsichordist and organist Jean-Luc Ho, and soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr. All three musicians had extensive experience performing early music, both as soloists and as members of other ensembles. They came together with the goal of creating a group that would showcase the beauty and complexity of early music, while also bringing a fresh and innovative approach to the genre. Over the years, Fuoco e Cenere has expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, depending on the specific repertoire being performed. However, the core members of the ensemble remain Bernfeld, Ho, and Kiehr, who continue to guide the group's artistic vision and direction. One of the highlights of Fuoco e Cenere's career was their performance at the prestigious Festival d'Aix-en-Provence in 2005. The ensemble was invited to perform a program of music by Claudio Monteverdi, one of the most important composers of the Baroque era. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish Fuoco e Cenere as one of the leading early music ensembles in Europe. Since then, the ensemble has gone on to perform at many other major festivals and venues around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have also released several acclaimed recordings, including a collection of Monteverdi's madrigals and a program of music by the French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. In addition to their performances and recordings, Fuoco e Cenere is also committed to education and outreach. They regularly give masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and have collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring early music to a wider audience. Throughout their career, Fuoco e Cenere has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 2010, they were awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or for their recording of Monteverdi's madrigals, and in 2015 they received the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Rameau's music. Despite their success, Fuoco e Cenere remains dedicated to their original mission of exploring and celebrating the beauty and complexity of early music. Through their performances, recordings, and educational outreach, they continue to inspire audiences around the world with their passion and artistry.More....
