Los Angeles Electric 8 is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing contemporary music on electric guitars. The ensemble was founded in 2002 by guitarist/composer Andrew York, who sought to create a new sound and style of music that blended classical and rock influences. The main members of Los Angeles Electric 8 are Andrew York, John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, Matthew Greif, Tariq Harb, Mak Grgic, and Colin Davin. All of the members are accomplished guitarists with extensive experience in classical and contemporary music. One of the highlights of Los Angeles Electric 8's career was their performance at the 2004 Guitar Foundation of America Convention, where they premiered a new work by Andrew York called "Bantu." The piece was inspired by African rhythms and featured complex polyrhythms and intricate guitar parts. The performance was a huge success and helped to establish Los Angeles Electric 8 as one of the leading ensembles in the contemporary classical music scene. Another notable performance by Los Angeles Electric 8 was their collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2008. The ensemble performed a new work by composer John Adams called "City Noir," which was written specifically for electric guitar ensemble and orchestra. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to bring the sound of electric guitars to a wider audience.
