Caroline Charrière was a Swiss composer born on August 27, 1960, in Lausanne, Switzerland. She was the daughter of a Swiss father and a French mother, and grew up in a bilingual environment. Her father was a music lover and introduced her to classical music at a young age. Charrière began playing the piano at the age of six and started composing her own music at the age of 12. Charrière studied music at the Lausanne Conservatory and later at the Geneva Conservatory, where she received a degree in composition. She also studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria, and at the University of California, San Diego. Her teachers included Klaus Huber, Brian Ferneyhough, and Roger Reynolds. Charrière's music is characterized by its complexity and its use of extended techniques. She often uses microtonality, unconventional notation, and non-traditional instruments in her compositions. Her music is also influenced by her interest in literature, philosophy, and visual arts. Charrière's first major work was her String Quartet No. 1, which she composed in 1985. The piece was premiered at the Festival d'Automne in Paris and received critical acclaim. It was followed by several other chamber works, including her Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano (1987) and her String Quartet No. 2 (1990). In the 1990s, Charrière began to receive international recognition for her work. She was awarded the Prix de la Fondation Vaudoise pour la Culture in 1991 and the Prix de la Ville de Genève in 1993. Her music was also featured at several international festivals, including the Donaueschingen Festival in Germany and the Festival Musica in Strasbourg, France. Charrière's orchestral works include her Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1995) and her Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (2000). She also composed several works for large ensembles, including her piece for 24 musicians, Les Larmes Blanches (1997). In addition to her work as a composer, Charrière was also a teacher. She taught composition at the Lausanne Conservatory and the Geneva Conservatory, and was a visiting professor at several universities in Europe and the United States. Tragically, Caroline Charrière passed away on December 16, 2018, at the age of 58. Her legacy lives on through her music, which continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.
