Peter Härtling was a German writer and composer who was born on November 13, 1933, in Chemnitz, Germany. He was the son of a doctor and grew up in a family that valued music and literature. Härtling began playing the piano at a young age and showed a talent for music early on. He studied music at the Frankfurt Conservatory and later at the University of Frankfurt. Härtling's interest in literature also developed early on, and he began writing poetry and short stories as a teenager. He published his first book of poetry, "Gedichte," in 1953, and his first novel, "Niemandsbruid," in 1962. Härtling's writing was influenced by his experiences growing up in Germany during World War II and the post-war years. His work often explored themes of memory, identity, and the human condition. In addition to his writing, Härtling continued to pursue his love of music. He composed several works for piano, including "Klavierstücke" and "Sonate für Klavier." His music was influenced by the works of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Schumann. Härtling's most famous work as a composer is his opera "Schuberts Winterreise," which premiered in 1990. The opera is based on Franz Schubert's song cycle of the same name and tells the story of a young man's journey through a winter landscape. Härtling's adaptation of the work was praised for its innovative use of music and text. Throughout his career, Härtling received numerous awards and honors for his writing and music. He was awarded the Goethe Prize in 1991 and the Georg Büchner Prize in 1997. Härtling was also a member of the German Academy for Language and Literature. Härtling continued to write and compose music until his death on July 10, 2017, in Rüsselsheim, Germany. He was remembered as a prolific and influential writer and composer who made significant contributions to German literature and music.
