The choir was founded in 1935 by Earl V. Moore, who was the director of the University of Michigan School of Music at the time. The University of Michigan Chamber Choir is made up of approximately 40 undergraduate and graduate students who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The choir is known for its exceptional vocal talent, as well as its ability to perform a wide range of musical styles, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. Over the years, the University of Michigan Chamber Choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. The choir has also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, performing in countries such as Italy, Germany, and Austria. One of the highlights of the University of Michigan Chamber Choir's history was its performance at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. The choir was invited to perform at the fair's Michigan Pavilion, where it gave several concerts to enthusiastic audiences. The choir's performances were so well-received that it was invited back to the World's Fair in 1965. In addition to its many performances, the University of Michigan Chamber Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. The University of Michigan Chamber Choir has been led by several distinguished conductors over the years, including Jerry Blackstone, who served as the choir's director from 2006 to 2018.
