The Vienna String Sextet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 60 years. The ensemble was founded in 1960 by six talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create something truly special. The founding members of the Vienna String Sextet were three violinists, two violists, and a cellist. The violinists were Willi Boskovsky, Walter Panhoffer, and Rudolf Streng. The violists were Günther Breitenbach and Nikolaus Hübner, and the cellist was Josef Merz. All six musicians were members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and they came together to form the Vienna String Sextet as a way to explore their love of chamber music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances, and they were soon in high demand. They performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and the United States. They also recorded extensively, producing over 50 albums during their career. One of the highlights of the Vienna String Sextet's career was their performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1961. They went on to perform at the festival many times over the years, becoming one of its most beloved ensembles. Another highlight of the Vienna String Sextet's career was their collaboration with the legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein. Rubinstein was a frequent collaborator with the ensemble, and they performed together on many occasions. Their performances were always highly anticipated, and they were widely regarded as some of the best chamber music performances of their time. The Vienna String Sextet also received many awards and honors during their career. They were awarded the Grand Prix du Disque in 1963 for their recording of Brahms' String Sextets, and they were also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1970.
