Kimiko Ishizaka is a renowned classical pianist and composer who has gained international recognition for her exceptional talent and dedication to the art of music. Born in Bonn, Germany in 1976, Ishizaka began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the instrument. Her parents, both music lovers, recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. Ishizaka's early musical education was shaped by her exposure to a wide range of musical styles and traditions. She studied with renowned pianists such as Rosalyn Tureck and Maria João Pires, and also explored the works of composers from different eras and regions, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. Her diverse musical background helped her develop a unique style that blends technical precision with emotional depth and sensitivity. In 2000, Ishizaka won the prestigious J.S. Bach International Piano Competition in Leipzig, Germany, which marked a turning point in her career. The competition, which is dedicated to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, is one of the most respected and challenging piano competitions in the world. Ishizaka's performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations impressed the judges and the audience alike, and established her as a rising star in the classical music scene. Since then, Ishizaka has performed in some of the most renowned concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Salzburg Festival. She has collaborated with leading orchestras and conductors, such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and the conductor Fabio Luisi. Her repertoire includes a wide range of works from different periods and genres, but she is particularly known for her interpretations of Bach's keyboard music. In addition to her performing career, Ishizaka is also a prolific composer and arranger. She has written numerous works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra, and has also arranged pieces by other composers for different instruments and ensembles. Her compositions are characterized by their lyrical melodies, intricate harmonies, and imaginative use of musical forms and structures. One of Ishizaka's most notable achievements is her recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, which she released in 2012 as part of the Open Goldberg Variations project. The project, which was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, aimed to create a free and open-source recording of the Goldberg Variations that could be shared and distributed without copyright restrictions. Ishizaka's recording, which was praised for its clarity, expressiveness, and technical mastery, has been downloaded and streamed millions of times and has become a benchmark for Bach performances. Ishizaka's dedication to making classical music accessible and relevant to a wider audience has also led her to explore new ways of presenting and promoting her music. In 2015, she launched the "Music for the Open Road" project, which involved performing and recording Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier in different locations around the world, such as a beach in California, a forest in Germany, and a temple in Japan. The project aimed to showcase the universality and timelessness of Bach's music, and to inspire people to connect with nature and their surroundings through music.
