In 1985, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "Big River," which was based on Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Mazzie played the role of Mary Jane Wilkes and received critical acclaim for her performance. Over the next few years, Mazzie continued to perform in Broadway productions, including "Into the Woods" and "Passion." In 1994, she received her first Tony Award nomination for her performance in the musical "Passion." Mazzie played the role of Clara, a woman who falls in love with a soldier who is already engaged to another woman. Her performance was praised for its emotional depth and powerful vocals. In 1998, Mazzie starred in the Broadway production of "Ragtime," which was based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow. She played the role of Mother, a wealthy white woman who becomes involved with a black musician. Mazzie's performance was once again praised for its emotional depth and powerful vocals. She received her second Tony Award nomination for her performance in "Ragtime."
