He was born in the city of Seville, in the southern region of Andalusia, on May 24, 1930. Castillo was the son of a music teacher, and he grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father, Manuel del Castillo Sr., was a well-known composer and conductor in Seville, and his mother, Carmen de la Rosa, was a pianist and singer. Castillo began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He showed great talent and dedication, and by the age of 16, he had already composed several works for piano and chamber ensembles. In 1948, he entered the Conservatory of Seville, where he studied composition with Joaquín Rodrigo, one of the most important Spanish composers of the 20th century. During his years at the conservatory, Castillo developed a deep interest in the music of his native Andalusia, particularly in the flamenco tradition. He began to incorporate elements of flamenco into his compositions, creating a unique style that blended classical and folk music. This fusion of styles would become a hallmark of his work. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Castillo moved to Madrid, where he continued his musical education at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He studied with some of the most prominent Spanish composers of the time, including Julián Orbón and Cristóbal Halffter. He also became involved in the cultural scene of Madrid, collaborating with artists and writers in the city's vibrant artistic community. In the 1950s, Castillo began to gain recognition as a composer. His works were performed in concerts and festivals throughout Spain, and he received several awards and prizes for his compositions. In 1957, he won the National Prize for Music, one of the most prestigious awards in Spain, for his work "Concierto para guitarra y orquesta" (Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra). Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Castillo continued to compose prolifically, creating works for a variety of instruments and ensembles. He also began to receive international recognition, with performances of his works in Europe and the Americas. In 1972, he was awarded the Medal of Fine Arts by the Spanish government, in recognition of his contributions to Spanish culture. One of Castillo's most important works is his "Suite flamenca" (Flamenco Suite), composed in 1960. This work is a collection of six pieces for guitar and orchestra, each inspired by a different flamenco style. The suite is a masterful fusion of classical and flamenco music, showcasing Castillo's unique style and his deep understanding of both traditions. Another notable work by Castillo is his "Concierto para piano y orquesta" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), composed in 1965. This work is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, with intricate and challenging passages that demonstrate Castillo's technical skill as a composer. The concerto also features elements of flamenco music, particularly in the third movement, which is a lively and rhythmic rumba. Castillo's music is characterized by its lyricism, its use of Spanish folk elements, and its fusion of classical and popular music. His works often feature virtuosic solos for various instruments, showcasing his deep understanding of the technical capabilities of different instruments.More....
