Eduard Nápravnik was a prominent Russian composer and conductor of the 19th century. He was born on March 24, 1839, in the city of Teplice, which is now part of the Czech Republic. His father, Václav Nápravník, was a Czech musician who worked as a conductor and composer. His mother, Antonie, was a singer. Nápravnik showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and violin at a young age. He also received a thorough education in music theory and composition. In 1856, at the age of 17, he moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to study at the Imperial Conservatory. He studied under some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. After completing his studies, Nápravnik began working as a conductor and composer. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative musician. In 1869, he was appointed conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, a position he held for over 30 years. During his tenure, he conducted many premieres of works by Russian composers, including Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and "The Queen of Spades." Nápravnik was also a prolific composer. He wrote over 200 works, including operas, ballets, symphonies, and chamber music. His most famous works include the operas "Dubrovsky" and "The Tzar's Bride," as well as his Symphony No. 1 in C minor and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major. Nápravnik's music is characterized by its lush harmonies, rich orchestration, and dramatic intensity. He was heavily influenced by the music of his contemporaries, including Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as the German Romantic tradition. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Nápravnik was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for many years and had a profound influence on the next generation of Russian musicians. His students included Sergei Prokofiev, Nikolai Myaskovsky, and Alexander Glazunov. Nápravnik's career was not without its challenges. He faced criticism from some quarters for his innovative approach to conducting and his willingness to experiment with new musical forms. He also struggled with health issues throughout his life, including a serious bout of tuberculosis in the 1870s. Despite these challenges, Nápravnik remained a beloved figure in the Russian musical world until his death in 1916. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
