Eduard Franck was a German composer and pianist born on October 17, 1817, in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland). He was the son of a wealthy Jewish merchant and was raised in a musical family. His father, Abraham Franck, was a talented amateur musician who played the violin, and his mother, Henriette, was a singer. Eduard Franck showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Franck's musical education began in earnest when he was sent to study with the composer and pianist Carl Loewe in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) at the age of 14. Loewe recognized Franck's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Franck continued his studies in Berlin with the composer and pianist Adolf Bernhard Marx, who was a leading figure in the Berlin music scene at the time. In 1837, Franck moved to Paris to study with the renowned pianist and composer FrĆ©dĆ©ric Chopin. Chopin was impressed with Franck's talent and took him on as a student. Franck studied with Chopin for two years and became a close friend of the composer. Chopin's influence can be heard in Franck's early works, which are characterized by their lyricism and virtuosity. After leaving Chopin's tutelage, Franck returned to Berlin and began to establish himself as a composer and pianist. He gave concerts throughout Germany and became known for his virtuosic piano playing and his elegant, lyrical compositions. In 1844, he married his cousin, Fanny Franck, who was also a talented pianist and composer. Franck's compositional style evolved over time, moving away from the virtuosic showpieces of his early years and towards a more introspective, Romantic style. His works are characterized by their lyricism, harmonic richness, and emotional depth. He was particularly skilled at writing for the piano, and his piano music is considered some of his finest work. One of Franck's most significant works is his Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 14, which he composed in 1845. The quintet is a masterpiece of the Romantic era and is considered one of the finest works in the chamber music repertoire. It is characterized by its rich harmonies, lyrical melodies, and virtuosic piano writing. The quintet was well-received when it was first performed and has remained a popular work to this day. Another notable work by Franck is his Symphony in D minor, Op. 48, which he composed in 1865. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Franck's skill as an orchestrator. It is characterized by its lush harmonies, sweeping melodies, and dramatic contrasts. The symphony was not well-received when it was first performed, but it has since become recognized as one of Franck's finest works. Franck also wrote a number of works for solo piano, including his Sonata in A major, Op. 12, which he composed in 1843. The sonata is a virtuosic work that showcases Franck's skill as a pianist and composer. It is characterized by its lyrical melodies, intricate harmonies, and technical demands. The sonata was well-received when it was first performed and has remained a popular work in the piano repertoire. In addition to his work as a composer, Franck was also a respected music educator. He taught piano and composition at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and his dedication to his students. Franck's later years were marked by personal tragedy.
