John Ferrillo is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a talented oboist. Born in 1954 in New York City, Ferrillo grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Ferrillo showed a keen interest in music and began playing the oboe at the age of 12. Ferrillo's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He studied under the tutelage of renowned oboist Harold Gomberg and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976. Ferrillo then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received a Master of Music degree in 1978. After completing his studies, Ferrillo began his professional career as an oboist. He joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City in 1979 and remained with the orchestra for 25 years. During his time with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Ferrillo performed in numerous productions and worked with some of the most talented musicians in the world. In addition to his work with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Ferrillo has also performed with other prestigious orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a featured soloist with many of these orchestras, performing works by composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi. Ferrillo's talent as an oboist has been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1980, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future. Ferrillo was also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Award in 1982. One of the highlights of Ferrillo's career was his performance at the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama. Ferrillo was one of the musicians selected to perform at the inauguration, and he played the oboe during the performance of John Williams' "Air and Simple Gifts." Ferrillo is also a dedicated teacher and has served on the faculty of several prestigious music schools, including the Juilliard School of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. In addition to his work as an oboist and teacher, Ferrillo is also a composer. He has written several pieces for the oboe, including a concerto that was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2012.
