Defunensemble is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in Helsinki, Finland. The ensemble was founded in 2001 by composer and conductor Juuso Hannukainen, who remains the artistic director of the group. The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music, often incorporating electronic and multimedia elements into their performances. The main members of Defunensemble include a core group of musicians who have been with the ensemble since its founding. These include violinist Pasi Pihlaja, cellist Juho Laitinen, percussionist Sami Klemola, and pianist Emil Holmström. The ensemble also frequently collaborates with guest musicians and composers. Defunensemble has performed extensively throughout Finland and internationally, including appearances at major festivals such as the Helsinki Festival, Musica Nova Helsinki, and the Warsaw Autumn Festival. The ensemble has also been featured on numerous recordings, including several albums of contemporary Finnish music. One of the highlights of Defunensemble's career was their performance of Kaija Saariaho's "Graal théâtre" at the 2004 Helsinki Festival. The piece, which was written for the ensemble, features a complex interplay between acoustic and electronic instruments, and was widely praised for its innovative use of technology in classical music. In 2007, Defunensemble was awarded the prestigious Teosto Prize for their contributions to Finnish contemporary music. The prize, which is awarded annually by the Finnish Composers' Copyright Society, recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of music composition and performance. Another notable performance by Defunensemble was their collaboration with the Finnish National Ballet in 2011. The ensemble provided live accompaniment for a performance of Jorma Elo's ballet "Glow - Stop - Glow", which was set to music by Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen. The performance was widely praised for its seamless integration of music and dance. In addition to their performances and recordings, Defunensemble is also committed to promoting contemporary classical music through education and outreach programs. The ensemble frequently works with young musicians and composers, providing workshops and masterclasses to help develop the next generation of classical music performers and creators. Overall, Defunensemble has established itself as one of the leading contemporary classical music ensembles in Finland and beyond. With their innovative approach to music-making and commitment to promoting new and experimental works, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of classical music and inspire audiences around the world.
