Born on 22nd May 1879 in Melbourne, Percy Code was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, William Code, was a well-known music teacher and conductor in Melbourne, and his mother, Mary Code, was a pianist and singer. Percy Code showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons from his father at a young age. He also learned to play the violin and the organ and showed a natural talent for composition. At the age of 16, he was appointed as the organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne, where he gained valuable experience in conducting and performing. In 1900, Percy Code traveled to Europe to further his musical education. He studied composition with Max Bruch in Berlin and later with Charles Villiers Stanford in London. He also attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied conducting with Henry Wood and composition with Charles Villiers Stanford. Upon his return to Australia in 1905, Percy Code established himself as a prominent composer and conductor. He was appointed as the conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1906, a position he held for 25 years. During his tenure, he introduced many new works to Australian audiences and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in the country. Percy Code's compositions were influenced by the Romantic tradition and often featured lush harmonies and sweeping melodies. He wrote in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, choral music, and operas. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1 in E-flat major, his Piano Concerto in C minor, and his opera, "The Garden of the Sleeping Beauty." He taught at the University of Melbourne and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where he mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music.
