Born in 1956 in the United States, Cheek grew up in a family that valued music and encouraged him to pursue his passion for the art form. Cheek began his musical journey at a young age, taking piano lessons from his mother and later studying with renowned pianists such as Leon Fleisher and Menahem Pressler. Throughout his career, Cheek has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, captivating audiences with his virtuosic playing and nuanced interpretations of classical repertoire. He has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic, and has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Itzhak Perlman. Cheek has also been recognized for his exceptional talent and dedication to music, receiving numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides financial support to help them further their careers. One of the highlights of Cheek's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1991. The performance was widely praised for Cheek's masterful interpretation of the piece, which showcased his technical prowess and musical sensitivity. The concert was also significant because it marked the first time a Chinese-American pianist had performed with the Berlin Philharmonic. Cheek's dedication to music has also led him to explore new and innovative ways of presenting classical music to audiences. In 2008, he collaborated with the Chinese composer Tan Dun to create a multimedia performance piece called "Water Passion," which combined music, dance, and visual art to explore the theme of water. The piece was performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City and received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to classical music.
