Eugène Damaré was a French composer and flautist who lived from 1840 to 1919. He was born in Bayonne, France, and showed an early interest in music. His father was a musician, and Damaré began playing the flute at a young age. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he won first prize in flute performance in 1860. After completing his studies, Damaré began a career as a flautist, performing in orchestras and as a soloist. He also began composing music, primarily for the flute. His compositions were well-received, and he became known for his virtuosic flute playing and his charming, light-hearted music. Damaré's most famous composition is his "Le Merle Blanc" (The White Blackbird), a virtuosic showpiece for the flute. The piece is known for its rapid runs and trills, and has become a staple of the flute repertoire. Damaré also composed a number of other works for the flute, including "La Tourterelle" (The Turtle Dove) and "Le Papillon" (The Butterfly). In addition to his flute compositions, Damaré also wrote music for the stage. He composed several operettas, including "La Petite Mariée" (The Little Bride) and "La Fille de Madame Angot" (Madame Angot's Daughter). These works were popular in their time, and helped to establish Damaré as a composer of light, entertaining music. Damaré's music was influenced by the popular music of his time, particularly the waltzes and polkas of Johann Strauss II. His compositions are characterized by their lightness and charm, and are often performed as encores or as light entertainment. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Damaré's personal life was marked by tragedy. His wife died in 1878, leaving him to raise their two young children alone. He also suffered from health problems, including a heart condition that forced him to retire from performing in 1900. Damaré continued to compose music until his death in 1919. His legacy as a composer and flautist lives on, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
