Taktus is a Canadian classical music ensemble that specializes in performing contemporary music on two marimbas. The ensemble was founded in 2010 by Greg Harrison and Jonny Smith, who both studied percussion at the University of Toronto. Harrison and Smith were inspired to form Taktus after attending a marimba duo concert in Toronto. They were struck by the beauty and versatility of the instrument, and decided to explore the possibilities of performing contemporary music on two marimbas. The ensemble's name, Taktus, is derived from the German word "takt," which means "beat" or "pulse." The name reflects the ensemble's focus on rhythm and percussion, as well as its commitment to exploring new and innovative musical ideas. Taktus has two main members: Greg Harrison and Jonny Smith. Harrison is a percussionist and composer who has performed with a variety of ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company. Smith is also a percussionist and composer, and has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet of Canada. Taktus has performed at a variety of venues and festivals across Canada, including the Ottawa Chamberfest, the Toronto Summer Music Festival, and the Vancouver New Music Festival. The ensemble has also performed internationally, including concerts in the United States and Europe. One of Taktus's most notable performances was at the 2015 Ottawa Chamberfest, where the ensemble performed a program of contemporary music by Canadian composers. The program included works by Christos Hatzis, Nicole Lizée, and Andrew Staniland, among others. The performance was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped to establish Taktus as one of Canada's leading contemporary music ensembles. Taktus has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2014, the ensemble was awarded the Emerging Artist Award by the Toronto Arts Foundation. The award recognized Taktus's innovative approach to contemporary music, as well as its commitment to promoting Canadian composers. In addition to its live performances, Taktus has also released several recordings. The ensemble's debut album, Glass Houses, was released in 2013 and features music by Philip Glass arranged for two marimbas. The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish Taktus as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. Overall, Taktus is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to exploring new and exciting musical ideas. With its focus on rhythm and percussion, as well as its commitment to promoting Canadian composers, Taktus has become one of Canada's most exciting and innovative contemporary music ensembles.More....
