Lev Parikian is a British conductor, writer, and musician who has made a name for himself in the classical music world. Born in London in 1970, Parikian grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Parikian began his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied the violin and piano. He later went on to study conducting at the Royal College of Music, where he was mentored by the renowned conductor Norman Del Mar. After completing his studies, Parikian began his career as a conductor, working with a number of orchestras and ensembles in the UK and abroad. He quickly gained a reputation for his dynamic and engaging performances, and was soon in demand as a guest conductor with some of the world's leading orchestras. One of the highlights of Parikian's early career was his appointment as the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He held this position from 1998 to 2002, and during his tenure he led the orchestra on a number of successful tours and recordings. He also worked closely with the young musicians to develop their skills and inspire them to pursue careers in music. In addition to his work as a conductor, Parikian is also a talented writer and has published several books on music and other topics. His first book, Waving, Not Drowning: A Guide to Classical Music, was published in 2013 and was well-received by critics and readers alike. He has since published several other books, including Why Do Birds Suddenly Disappear? and Into the Tangled Bank: In Which Our Author Ventures Outdoors to Consider the British in Nature. Parikian's writing has been praised for its wit, humor, and insight, and he has become a popular commentator on classical music and other cultural topics. He has written for a number of publications, including The Guardian, The Observer, and BBC Music Magazine, and has also appeared on radio and television programs to discuss music and other topics. Despite his success as a writer, Parikian has remained committed to his work as a conductor and continues to lead orchestras and ensembles around the world. He has conducted the London Mozart Players, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra, among others, and has also worked with a number of opera companies and choral groups. One of the highlights of Parikian's recent career was his appointment as the conductor of the Reigate and Redhill Choral Society in 2018. This community choir had been struggling to attract new members and was in danger of folding, but under Parikian's leadership it has experienced a resurgence of interest and enthusiasm. He has worked closely with the choir to develop their skills and repertoire, and has also helped to raise their profile through a series of successful concerts and events. In addition to his work as a conductor and writer, Parikian is also a passionate advocate for music education and outreach. He has worked with a number of organizations to promote music education and to bring classical music to new audiences, and has also been involved in a number of charitable initiatives. Parikian's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with a number of awards and honors.
