Collectif9 is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2011 in Montreal, Canada. The group is made up of nine musicians who play a variety of instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. The ensemble is known for its innovative approach to classical music, which combines traditional repertoire with contemporary arrangements and original compositions. The founding members of collectif9 were all graduates of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, and they shared a passion for exploring new ways of presenting classical music to audiences. The group's name, collectif9, is a reference to the nine musicians who make up the ensemble, as well as a nod to the French word "collectif," which means "collective" or "group." From the beginning, collectif9 set out to challenge the conventions of classical music performance. The group's repertoire includes both classical masterpieces and contemporary works, and their performances often incorporate elements of theater, dance, and multimedia. The ensemble's goal is to create a unique and immersive experience for audiences, one that goes beyond the traditional concert format. Collectif9 has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Canada and around the world. In 2013, the group made their debut at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their performance of Bartok's String Quartet No. 4. The following year, collectif9 performed at the Ottawa Chamberfest, where they premiered a new work by Canadian composer Nicole Lizée. In 2015, collectif9 released their debut album, "Volksmobiles," which features arrangements of folk music from around the world. The album received widespread praise for its innovative approach to traditional music, and it helped to establish collectif9 as one of the most exciting and dynamic classical music ensembles of their generation. Since then, collectif9 has continued to push the boundaries of classical music performance. In 2017, the group premiered a new work by Canadian composer Maxime McKinley, which was inspired by the music of the French composer Olivier Messiaen. The piece, titled "No Time for Chamber Music," was performed at the Montreal Symphony House and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Collectif9 has also been recognized for their contributions to the classical music world. In 2016, the group was awarded the Prix Opus for "Concert of the Year - Modern and Contemporary Music" for their performance of "Volksmobiles" at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival. The following year, collectif9 was nominated for a Juno Award for "Classical Album of the Year - Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment" for their album "Volksmobiles." In addition to their performances and recordings, collectif9 is also committed to education and outreach. The group regularly gives workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and they have collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to new audiences. Collectif9's innovative approach to classical music has earned them a devoted following and critical acclaim. With their unique blend of tradition and innovation, the ensemble is poised to continue pushing the boundaries of classical music performance for years to come.
