Born on March 30, 1925, in Zagreb, Croatia, Malec grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Malec began his musical education at an early age, studying piano and composition with his parents. In 1945, Malec moved to Paris to continue his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris. He studied composition with Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen, and piano with Yvonne Loriod. During this time, Malec also became interested in electronic music and began experimenting with tape recorders and other electronic equipment. Malec's early works were influenced by the serialism of his teachers, but he soon began to develop his own style. In the 1950s, he became associated with the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), a group of composers and researchers who were exploring the possibilities of electronic music. Malec's work with the GRM led to the creation of some of his most important works, including "L'Etude I" (1958) and "L'Etude II" (1960). Malec's music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms, intricate textures, and innovative electronic sounds. He was particularly interested in exploring the relationship between sound and space, and many of his works were designed to be performed in specific acoustic environments. In addition to his work in electronic music, Malec also composed for traditional instruments. His works for orchestra include "Concerto for Orchestra" (1963) and "Symphonie pour un homme seul" (1964), which was written in collaboration with Pierre Henry. Malec's contributions to the field of electroacoustic music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1970, he was awarded the Grand Prix National de la Musique by the French government. He was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Académie des Sciences, Arts et Belles-Lettres de Dijon. Malec continued to compose and teach until his death on August 14, 2019, at the age of 94. His legacy as a pioneer of electronic music and a leading figure in contemporary classical music continues to inspire new generations of composers and musicians.More....
