Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1984 in Frankfurt, Germany. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, and its commitment to promoting new works by emerging composers. The founding members of Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt were violinist Rainer Kussmaul, cellist Christoph Henkel, and pianist Hartmut Höll. All three musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, with Kussmaul having played with the Berlin Philharmonic and Henkel having been a member of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. From the beginning, Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt was dedicated to exploring the full range of classical music, from the Baroque era to the present day. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and many other composers, as well as contemporary pieces by living composers. One of the highlights of Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt's early years was its collaboration with the German composer Hans Werner Henze. Henze was known for his avant-garde approach to classical music, and his works often incorporated elements of jazz, rock, and other popular genres. Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt performed several of Henze's works, including his Piano Concerto No. 2 and his String Quartet No. 3. In the years that followed, Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt continued to expand its repertoire and its reach. The ensemble performed at major music festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. The ensemble also toured extensively in Asia, performing in Japan, South Korea, and China. One of the most notable performances in Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt's history was its 1999 concert at the Berlin Philharmonic. The ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, and received a standing ovation from the audience. The concert was later released on CD and received critical acclaim. Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt has also been recognized for its commitment to promoting new works by emerging composers. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Wolfgang Rihm, Matthias Pintscher, and Jörg Widmann. In 2006, the ensemble received the German Music Publishers' Association Award for its contributions to contemporary music. Today, Ensemble Concertant Frankfurt continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music. The ensemble's current members include violinist Antje Weithaas, cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, and pianist Lars Vogt. The ensemble's repertoire remains diverse and innovative, and its commitment to promoting new works by emerging composers remains as strong as ever.
