Ciaramella is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Renaissance and early Baroque music. The group was founded in 2004 by Adam and Rotem Gilbert, who are both accomplished musicians and scholars of early music. Adam Gilbert, who plays the recorder and other wind instruments, received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and his Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has performed with numerous early music ensembles, including the Newberry Consort, Piffaro, and the Boston Camerata. Rotem Gilbert, who plays the recorder and the viola da gamba, received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and her Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has performed with many early music ensembles, including the Newberry Consort, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, and the Folger Consort. Ciaramella takes its name from a type of Renaissance wind instrument that was popular in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. The ensemble's repertoire includes music from this period, as well as from the early Baroque era. The group's performances are characterized by their virtuosity, their attention to historical accuracy, and their ability to bring the music of the past to life for modern audiences. Ciaramella has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals, including the Boston Early Music Festival, the Berkeley Early Music Festival, and the Indianapolis Early Music Festival. The group has also been featured on numerous recordings, including their debut album, "Dances on Movable Ground," which was released in 2008. One of the highlights of Ciaramella's career was their performance at the 2011 Berkeley Early Music Festival, where they presented a program of music from the court of King Henry VIII. The ensemble's performance was praised for its "exquisite musicianship" and its ability to "transport the audience back in time." Ciaramella has also received critical acclaim for their recordings. Their 2014 album, "The White Rose," which features music from the court of Burgundy in the 15th century, was described by Early Music America as "a triumph of scholarship and musicianship." The group's 2017 album, "La Morte della Ragione," which features music from the early Baroque era, was praised by Gramophone for its "impeccable musicianship" and its ability to "bring the music to life with a sense of joy and vitality." In addition to their performances and recordings, Ciaramella is also committed to education and outreach. The group has presented workshops and masterclasses at universities and music schools throughout the United States, and they have worked with young musicians through programs such as the San Francisco Early Music Society's Baroque Workshop for Young Performers. Ciaramella's dedication to historical accuracy and their ability to bring the music of the past to life have made them one of the most respected and sought-after early music ensembles in the United States. Their performances and recordings have received critical acclaim, and their commitment to education and outreach ensures that the music of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras will continue to be appreciated and enjoyed by future generations.
