Robert Skellern was a British classical music composer born on May 12, 1950, in Manchester, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a singer. Skellern showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later learned to play the guitar and the trumpet. Skellern attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition under the tutelage of John Lambert. He graduated with honors in 1972 and began his career as a composer. Skellern's early works were influenced by the classical music of the Romantic era, particularly the works of Brahms and Schumann. In 1973, Skellern released his first album, "You're a Lady," which became a hit in the UK and reached the top ten on the charts. The album featured Skellern's signature style of blending classical and pop music, with lush orchestral arrangements and catchy melodies. The title track, "You're a Lady," became a classic and is still played on radio stations today. Skellern continued to release albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "A Cottage in the Country," "Astaire," and "The Way You Look Tonight." He also composed music for film and television, including the theme for the BBC series "The Two Ronnies." Skellern's music was known for its romantic and nostalgic themes, often evoking a bygone era. His compositions were characterized by their lush orchestration and intricate harmonies, which were influenced by his classical training. Skellern was also known for his witty and clever lyrics, which often contained wordplay and puns. One of Skellern's most famous works is his 1978 album "The Very Best of Robert Skellern," which featured some of his most popular songs, including "My Lonely Room," "Love is the Sweetest Thing," and "She's a Lady." The album was a commercial success and cemented Skellern's reputation as a talented composer and performer. Skellern's later works included the 1990 album "The Romantic Piano of Robert Skellern," which featured solo piano compositions, and the 1995 album "The Magic of Gershwin," which featured Skellern's arrangements of George Gershwin's music.
