Israel Mombach was a Brazilian composer and pianist who was born on August 22, 1909, in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. He was the son of a German father and a Brazilian mother, and his family was musically inclined. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer. Mombach began his musical studies at a young age, and he showed great talent as a pianist. Mombach's musical education began at the Conservatory of Music in Porto Alegre, where he studied piano with the renowned pianist and composer, Henrique Oswald. He also studied composition with the composer, Francisco Braga. Mombach's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he won several awards and competitions. In 1928, Mombach moved to Rio de Janeiro to continue his musical studies. He studied piano with the pianist, Arnaldo Estrella, and composition with the composer, Francisco Mignone. Mombach's time in Rio de Janeiro was a period of great growth and development for him as a musician. He was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and genres, and he began to develop his own unique voice as a composer. Mombach's first major composition was his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1932. The concerto was well-received, and it established Mombach as a composer to watch. He continued to compose throughout the 1930s, and his works were performed by some of the leading musicians of the time. In 1940, Mombach moved to São Paulo, where he became a professor of piano at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music. He continued to compose during this time, and his works began to receive more widespread recognition. In 1947, he won the National Composition Prize for his Symphony No. 1. Mombach's music was characterized by its lyricism and its use of Brazilian folk melodies and rhythms. He was deeply influenced by the music of his native country, and he sought to incorporate these elements into his compositions. His music was also influenced by the European classical tradition, and he was particularly drawn to the music of Beethoven and Brahms. Mombach's most famous work is his Piano Concerto No. 2, which he composed in 1952. The concerto is a virtuosic tour-de-force for the soloist, and it has become a staple of the piano repertoire. The concerto is notable for its use of Brazilian rhythms and melodies, which give the work a distinctly Brazilian flavor. Mombach continued to compose throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and his works were performed by some of the leading musicians of the time. He also continued to teach at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music, where he was a beloved and respected teacher. Mombach's music fell out of favor in the 1970s and 1980s, as Brazilian music became more influenced by popular music styles. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Mombach's music, and his works are once again being performed and recorded. Israel Mombach died on December 22, 1990, in São Paulo, Brazil. He left behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music, which continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.
