Gilad Cohen is a Canadian composer of classical music, known for his unique style that blends traditional and contemporary elements. Born in 1980 in Jerusalem, Israel, Cohen grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Cohen began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano and theory. He later studied composition at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. He then moved to Canada to pursue his Master's degree in composition at the University of Toronto, where he studied with renowned composers such as Christos Hatzis and Gary Kulesha. Cohen's early works were heavily influenced by his Jewish heritage and the music of his homeland. His compositions often featured elements of Jewish folk music and traditional Middle Eastern rhythms. One of his early works, "Klezmer Concerto," was a tribute to the klezmer music of Eastern Europe and featured a solo clarinet accompanied by a chamber orchestra. As Cohen's career progressed, he began to incorporate more contemporary elements into his music. His compositions became more experimental and abstract, often featuring unconventional instrumentation and extended techniques. He also began to explore themes of identity and cultural heritage in his music, drawing on his experiences as an Israeli-Canadian composer. One of Cohen's most notable works is "Akhmatova Songs," a song cycle based on the poetry of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. The piece was commissioned by the Canadian Art Song Project and premiered in 2016. The cycle features six songs, each of which explores a different aspect of Akhmatova's life and work. The music is haunting and evocative, with Cohen's use of dissonance and unconventional harmonies adding to the emotional intensity of the piece. Another notable work by Cohen is "Fantasia on a Theme by William Lawes," which was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2018. The piece is based on a theme by English composer William Lawes and features a large orchestra with a prominent role for the harp. The music is lush and atmospheric, with Cohen's use of orchestration creating a sense of depth and richness. Cohen's music has been performed by a number of prominent ensembles and musicians, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Gryphon Trio. He has also received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including the Toronto Emerging Composer Award and the Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music. In addition to his work as a composer, Cohen is also an active educator and mentor. He has taught composition at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, and has served as a mentor for young composers through programs such as the Canadian Music Centre's Composer-in-Residence program. Overall, Gilad Cohen is a talented and innovative composer whose work reflects his diverse cultural background and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of classical music. His music is both accessible and challenging, and his unique voice has earned him a place among the most exciting composers of his generation.
