She was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a choirmaster and her mother was a singer. Williams began playing the piano at a young age and showed a talent for music early on. Williams attended Cardiff University, where she studied music under the guidance of David Evans. She also studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music in London. Williams was one of the first women to study composition at the Royal College of Music, and she was the first woman to win the prestigious Cobbett Prize for composition. Williams' early works were influenced by Welsh folk music and the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Her first major work was the Suite for Nine Instruments, which was premiered in 1931. The suite was well-received and helped establish Williams as a composer to watch. In the 1930s, Williams began to focus on orchestral music. Her Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1944, was the first symphony by a Welsh composer to be performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The symphony was well-received and helped establish Williams as one of the leading composers of her generation. Williams' music was often described as lyrical and expressive. She was known for her use of Welsh folk melodies and her ability to create vivid musical landscapes. Her music was also influenced by the natural world, and she often used musical motifs to represent different aspects of nature. Williams' most famous work is the Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes, which was premiered in 1940. The piece is based on traditional Welsh nursery rhymes and features a variety of Welsh folk melodies. The Fantasia is a lively and colorful work that showcases Williams' talent for orchestration and her love of Welsh music. Williams continued to compose throughout her life, but her output slowed in the 1960s due to health issues. She died on February 10, 1977, at the age of 70. Today, Williams is remembered as one of the most important Welsh composers of the 20th century. Her music is still performed and recorded, and she is celebrated for her contributions to Welsh music and culture.More....
