Berenguer's musical education began at the Municipal School of Music in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where he studied piano, harmony, and composition. He later continued his studies at the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona, where he studied with some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Joaquín Rodrigo and Roberto Gerhard. In 1946, Berenguer moved to Paris to continue his studies at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger, one of the most influential music teachers of the 20th century. Boulanger was known for her rigorous teaching methods and for having taught some of the most important composers of the time, including Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones. Berenguer's music has been performed by some of the most important musicians and ensembles of the 20th century, including the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Arditti Quartet, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
