He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Slater began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several prominent teachers, including Alberto Guerrero and Earle Moss. He also studied composition with John Weinzweig and became interested in writing his own music. In 1952, Slater graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1954. While at Juilliard, Slater studied with Rosina Lhévinne and became a skilled pianist. After completing his studies, Slater returned to Toronto and began a career as a composer and pianist. He wrote music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments. His compositions were often influenced by his love of jazz and his interest in exploring new sounds and techniques. One of Slater's most notable works is his Piano Concerto, which he composed in 1960. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist and features a lively and rhythmic first movement, a lyrical second movement, and a lively and energetic finale. The piece has been performed by many pianists and orchestras around the world and is considered one of Slater's most important works. Another notable work by Slater is his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1957. The quartet is a complex and challenging piece that showcases Slater's skill as a composer. The work features intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and a wide range of emotions. In addition to his work as a composer, Slater was also a respected pianist. He performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Canada and the United States and was known for his technical skill and musical sensitivity. Throughout his career, Slater received many awards and honors for his work as a composer and pianist. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1991. He also received the Canadian Music Council Medal in 1979 and the Toronto Arts Award in 1992.
