Martha Strongin Katz is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born in New York City in 1945, Katz grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, David Strongin, was a violinist, and her mother, Lillian Fuchs, was a violist. Katz's siblings, Joseph and Michael, were also musicians, with Joseph being a cellist and Michael a violinist. Katz began her musical training at an early age, studying the piano with her mother and the viola with her aunt, Lillian Fuchs. She later attended the Juilliard School, where she studied with William Lincer and Lillian Fuchs. Katz also studied with violist Walter Trampler and cellist Leonard Rose. Katz's career as a professional musician began in the 1960s, when she joined the New York Philharmonic as a violist. She remained with the orchestra for over a decade, during which time she also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. In 1975, Katz left the New York Philharmonic to pursue a career as a freelance musician. Throughout her career, Katz has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors of our time, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Simon Rattle. Katz's repertoire is vast and includes works by composers from the Baroque era to the present day. She has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, and John Harbison. Katz is also a dedicated chamber musician and has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition to her performing career, Katz is also a respected teacher and mentor. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians. Katz's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1986, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. She was also awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1971 and the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation's Career Grant in 1972. Katz has also been recognized for her contributions to the field of music education. In 2003, she was awarded the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award by Chamber Music America for her work as a teacher and mentor. Throughout her career, Katz has remained dedicated to the art of music and has inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world. Her passion for music and her commitment to excellence have made her one of the most respected and admired musicians of our time.
