Aletter showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. Aletter's musical education continued at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn. After completing his studies, Aletter worked as a conductor in various German cities, including Bremen, Königsberg, and Danzig. In 1871, Aletter was appointed as the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe. He held this position for 14 years, during which time he established the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in the world.
