Giuseppe Demachi was an Italian composer and violinist who lived during the 18th century. He was born in 1732 in Bologna, Italy, and was the son of a musician. His father, Pietro Demachi, was a violinist and composer who worked at the Basilica di San Petronio in Bologna. It was under his father's tutelage that Giuseppe began his musical education. Giuseppe Demachi showed great promise as a musician from a young age. He began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly became proficient in the instrument. He also showed an aptitude for composition, and by the age of 12, he had already written several pieces of music. In 1748, at the age of 16, Demachi was appointed as a violinist in the orchestra of the Basilica di San Petronio, where his father worked. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and was soon given the opportunity to perform as a soloist. His performances were well-received, and he soon became known throughout Bologna as a virtuoso violinist. In 1752, Demachi left Bologna and traveled to Paris, where he hoped to further his musical education. He studied with several prominent musicians, including Jean-Marie Leclair and Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville. While in Paris, Demachi also began composing music in earnest. He wrote several sonatas for violin and continuo, as well as a number of concertos. In 1754, Demachi returned to Italy and settled in Turin, where he was appointed as a violinist in the court orchestra. He remained in Turin for several years, during which time he continued to compose music and perform as a soloist. In 1760, he left Turin and traveled to London, where he hoped to establish himself as a composer and performer. In London, Demachi quickly became a popular figure in the city's musical scene. He performed regularly at concerts and was praised for his virtuosic playing. He also continued to compose music, writing several concertos and sonatas for violin and continuo. In 1762, he published a collection of six sonatas for violin and basso continuo, which were well-received by critics and musicians alike. In 1764, Demachi returned to Italy and settled in Florence, where he was appointed as a violinist in the court orchestra. He remained in Florence for the rest of his life, continuing to compose music and perform as a soloist. He also taught music to several students, including his son, Pietro, who became a prominent composer in his own right. Demachi's music is characterized by its virtuosic violin writing and its elegant melodies. His compositions are often compared to those of his contemporaries, such as Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach. His works include several concertos for violin and orchestra, as well as sonatas for violin and continuo. One of Demachi's most famous works is his Concerto in E minor for violin and orchestra. The piece is notable for its virtuosic violin writing, which requires the soloist to perform a number of difficult passages. The concerto is also notable for its beautiful melodies and its use of counterpoint. Another notable work by Demachi is his Sonata in G minor for violin and continuo. The piece is characterized by its expressive melodies and its use of ornamentation. It is often performed by violinists today and is considered to be one of Demachi's most popular works. Giuseppe Demachi died in Florence in 1791 at the age of 59.
