Elizabeth Remy Johnson is a renowned harpist and classical music artist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and stunning musicality. Born in 1960 in Atlanta, Georgia, Johnson began playing the harp at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. As a young musician, Johnson studied with some of the most respected harpists in the world, including Alice Chalifoux and Susann McDonald. She also attended the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in harp performance. After completing her studies, Johnson embarked on a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the most respected orchestras and ensembles in the world. She has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1995, where she serves as principal harpist. Throughout her career, Johnson has received numerous awards and accolades for her musical achievements. In 1983, she won the American Harp Society's National Competition, and in 1985, she was a finalist in the prestigious International Harp Competition in Israel. She has also been a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Talent Development Program Award. One of the highlights of Johnson's career was her performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where she played the harp during the opening and closing ceremonies. She has also performed at the White House for President Bill Clinton and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition to her work as a performer, Johnson is also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She has served on the faculty of the University of Georgia and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and she has given masterclasses and workshops at universities and conservatories around the world. Johnson is also an advocate for new music and has commissioned and premiered numerous works for the harp. She has collaborated with composers such as Jennifer Higdon, Michael Gandolfi, and Augusta Read Thomas to create new and innovative works for the instrument. Throughout her career, Johnson has remained committed to the art of classical music and the harp, and her dedication and passion for her craft have made her one of the most respected and admired musicians of her generation.More....
