Artist Info
Mike Block is a renowned cellist, composer, and educator who has made a significant impact on the world of classical music. Born on September 22, 1982, in Portland, Oregon, Block grew up in a musical family and began playing the cello at the age of six. His parents were both music teachers, and his father was a professional cellist, so it was only natural that Block would follow in their footsteps. Block's early musical education was heavily influenced by the Suzuki method, which emphasizes learning by ear and repetition. He quickly developed a love for the cello and began performing in local youth orchestras and chamber groups. In high school, he attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he studied with renowned cellist David Requiro. After graduating from Interlochen, Block attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with cellist Joel Krosnick. Throughout his education, Block was recognized for his exceptional talent and received numerous awards and honors. In 2001, he won the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Division Cello Competition, and in 2003, he was a finalist in the Naumburg International Cello Competition. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship, which provided him with financial support throughout his undergraduate and graduate studies. After completing his education, Block began to establish himself as a professional cellist and composer. He quickly gained a reputation for his versatility and ability to play a wide range of musical styles, from classical to folk to jazz. He became a member of the Silk Road Ensemble, a group founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma that explores the intersection of different musical traditions from around the world. Block has also collaborated with a number of other prominent musicians, including singer-songwriter Alison Krauss, banjo player Béla Fleck, and jazz pianist Chick Corea. He has performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Newport Folk Festival. In addition to his performing career, Block is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at a number of institutions, including the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Silk Road Project at Harvard University. He is the founder and artistic director of the Mike Block String Camp, a summer program for string players of all ages and levels. Throughout his career, Block has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2012, he was awarded a Grammy Award for his work on the album "The Goat Rodeo Sessions" with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer. He has also been recognized by the American String Teachers Association, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Despite his many accomplishments, Block remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to push the boundaries of what is possible on the cello and to inspire others to explore the world of music. His passion and talent have made him one of the most respected and beloved musicians of his generation.More....
