Willi Rosenthal was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1928, in Berlin, Germany. He was the youngest of three children born to a Jewish family. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a talented pianist who introduced him to music at a young age. Rosenthal began playing the piano when he was just four years old, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. He received his formal music education at the Berlin Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most prominent music teachers of the time. In 1938, when Rosenthal was just ten years old, his family was forced to flee Germany due to the rise of the Nazi regime. They settled in the United States, where Rosenthal continued his music education at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne, and graduated with honors in 1948. After completing his studies, Rosenthal embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1950, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. He quickly became known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to interpret complex musical works with ease. Throughout his career, Rosenthal performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with many of the leading conductors of the time, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Georg Solti. One of Rosenthal's most notable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, which he performed with the New York Philharmonic in 1962. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance – Instrumental Soloist or Soloists (with or without orchestra) in 1963. Rosenthal was also a prolific recording artist, and he released numerous albums throughout his career. Some of his most notable recordings include his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. In addition to his performing career, Rosenthal was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Juilliard School for many years, and he also served as a visiting professor at several other universities and conservatories around the world. Throughout his career, Rosenthal received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In addition to his Grammy Award, he was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan in 1987. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. Despite his many accomplishments, Rosenthal remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death on January 27, 2019, at the age of 90.
